Designed to bridge the funding gap in the commercialisation of new technologies in the biomedical area, Wellcome Trust’s Translation Awards consider any aspect of technology development from a range of disciplines and must address an unmet need in healthcare or in applied medical research.
The next deadline for preliminary applications for Translation Awards is 23 July 2010 and the trust is keen to receive quality applications from UK-based researchers from both academia and companies.
An example of a project recently funded under this initiative is a new antibiotic to combat drug-resistant strains of bacteria. Plans for a phase II trial to assess efficacy are already underway, with Translation Award support. The new antibiotic - PT1.2 - has been developed by Phico Therapeutics, to treat nasal infections of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus including the 'superbug' MRSA.
