The NHS has grown to become the world’s largest publicly funded health service, with The Department of Health (DH) in overall charge of the NHS with a cabinet minister reporting as Secretary of State for Health to the Prime Minister. The DoH has control of England’s 10 Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs), which oversees all NHS activities in England. The Leeds-based strategic health authority for the region - NHS Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority - acts as a key link between the DoH and the NHS to ensures that the national health priority is implemented locally. Yorkshire and Humber has a diverse healthcare need, which is serviced by one of the 34 NHS trusts in the Region. These NHS Trusts are made up of Primary Care Trusts, managing the provision of primary care; NHS Trusts, managing hospitals; NHS Foundation Trusts, which are independent not-for-profit organisations that provide a tailored service for the local community, and Mental Health Trusts, which provide specialist care through GPs, social services and primary care services and the Ambulance Trust.
